Welcome, you're among friends. There's about 50,000 of us who suffer from this dilemma on a daily basis. The vendors keep popping out newer and better products everyday as well, which just makes the problems worst.
What items are you wanting to buy? I assume because you posted in this forum you're looking for a tarp, top quilt, and underquilt? Do you already have a hammock? If so, which one? That will partially determine what models of the weather protection items you should be looking at.Originally Posted by camp43
+1 on what markrvp said. Picking a vendor depends on what you need. Picking the hammock (or other piece of gear) depends on how you'll be using it. Car camping for comfort can be very different than backpacking.
The good news is that all the cottage vendors on this site are fantastic. I've been impressed with all of them so far, including Warbonnet, HammockGear, BIAS, DutchWare and Dream Hammocks (which is the list I've purchased from).

Well I've got an ENO DN hammock that I like and have no problem with. Currently I've looking for a tarp. I've got an Exped Scout Extreme that is nice for car or canoe camping and even backpacking but I'd really like to cut the weight of the Tarp. It's about 11x10 or there about but weights in at 28oz before you add guylines and stakes. Then it's 42oz.
I'm looking at going towards a cat cut hex tarp to save some weight. Something like a Tadpole or a MacCat etc..... I've never used one though and looking at most of them I can't convince myself they provide the coverage I like.
The cat cut rectangular ones from OES seem to be a nice compromise and a 10x10 will save my 10 oz and the 10x12 will save me 8oz.
Then I tell myself just buy something from Zpacks or HMG since I can REALLY save some weight. I have a tendancy to buy something cheaper to save some money and then down the road buy the expensive thing anyway and I'm trying to get out of this habit.

To help on both, get a cuben tarp to cut your weight and get the expensive one out of the way. Also the view through the tarp will help to calm you and get rid of the headache.

Yeah, get what you can afford. If you can afford cuben then go for it. If you're worried about coverage get a winter tarp, I don't think I've seen a cuben tarp over 10oz.
I'll second the CFTarp. You probably won't find a "deal" on one by waiting, unless construction costs go down significantly.
You will be able to get the coverage you are accustom to, and still be lighter than anything else shelter-wise you might carry, outside of a Ghost.
Packs, Hammocks, Insulation, Cloths, Stoves and Cook kits, can all be had second hand in the forums, or at Sale pricing quite often direct from our cottage vendors, several times per year. Call them, Talk to them. Be nice to Dutch, he might send you bling,
Golite, REI, and other chain outfitters, run clearance, and basement sales, with discount codes and sometimes free shipping on their products too.
