    Affordable down substitute

Even though it's no longer Christmas, I'm doing the awesome thing and trying to hook my cousin up with a simple kit...he goes camping with me mostly.

If I get one of the pre-made UQ shells that are now (awesomely) available, is there a down substitute that's reasonably priced and at least marginally thermally comparable to down that I could use in the baffles?
I used to be a somebody, now I just camp.

Its been a few months but several of us found $10 K Mart pillows with 16oz duck down. No feathers, i'm guessing 550FP. I found mine in the clearance section, not the linen section.

Not sure about a substitute, but I got my down from a store called Essex. I'm not sure if they are a national chain or not. I got about 20 oz of 700 fp down For $25

Rather than go that route have you priced polyester filled quits? I have not lately but I think they run lower in cost than down.

Loose primaloft is cheap $35 for 5# and I would say it's about 450-500 fill power

Hey Gresh! I have tried the synthetic materials (poly fills) and they do work - the only problem is that when you put enough in the baffles, the quilt becomes very unfoldable and will not squash down at all.

I've been using Cannon duck down pillows from KMart - Like $18 for a king size, over 40oz- as a cheap alternative for several people. Takes more down per baffle (it's like 550 down), but works very well and squashes down to basketball size with a full size shell. Gotta pick out some feathers, but cheap is cheap.

Hi ahhhgladius! I make them. See my signature for my site.
I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."

I check Goodwill (and several other local thrift stores) for downy goodness about once a week. Now that Christmas is past, there should be an influx of new stuff that people have replaced.
