I only sleep on my side, in a bed or hammock. I don't need a pillow between my knees in either case.

Other than setting it (WBBB 1.1 Dbl) up once in Tanglewood Park here in Clemmons and taking a quick nap I haven't had a chance to do an overnight excursion. I did notice that on my back I didn't have that constant urge to roll on my side like I do in a bed. But when I did lay on my side - oh man, how great not to have that pressure on the hip bone (I'm skinny).
I'm still collecting gear and that's the big reason I haven't been out yet. I got rid of all my camping/backpacking gear years ago and had to start from scratch. All I have left to get is a pad and UQ, but xmas buying is in the way right now.
.
I sleep on my *left* side only at home, usually with a pillow between knees...for the last 35+ years. Any other configuration leaves me in pain for days. However, once I decide to sleep I pretty much just do it, that instant (Navy training).
But in a hammock half the time I find I have just slept on my back! If on my side (which is, yes, very comfortable) I usually use a fleece or something between the knees. In a hammock you can go Figure-4 position, too...very nice. Another hammock-only position that's great is the sole-to-sole thing, knees resting up on the sidewalls.
Oh, and usually I wake up in much the same position as when I dozed off - totally refreshed and free of issues on awakening. !
I'm a side sleeper both in a bed and in a hammock and I don't use anything between my knees. Having an underquilt does make a huge difference for warmth, as Te-Wa pointed out, when your side sleeping. I suffered a lot from either cold knees or shoulders depending on how I shifted when I was using a sleeping pad. Now that I've got my UQ (big ups to Te-Wa for the awesome quilt) I'm plenty warm while I'm side sleeping.
I sleep on my back or my side with no need for anything between my knees. I find the hammock totally alleviates any back issues I have (had). On the rare occasion that I do have to resort to a bed, I pay dearly for it the next morning.

after surgery on my shoulder. i couldnt sleep on my side.. . just in the past year have i found hammocks.. dream come true.. i roll a lot less and i find myself swinging to sleep and not waking up til first light... thanks HF for all the intel,
I'm a true side sleeper in bed and sometimes in the hammock. As others have mentioned...In the hammock I can actually fall asleep on my back sometimes, maybe slightly turned to one side. I use fleece jacket between knees and use a tiny camp pillow for my neck. I have only slept in my hammock about 20 times and it gets better every time!! It took some getting used to but now I absolutely love it!
I have chronic pain issues. The funny thing is, I climb into my hammock get everything out from under me, (except my UQ and hammock). I just kind of pass out once I am settled. Sometimes I put a rolled towel under the back of my neck, to support it. I move very little. At home I am up and down several times a night.
