    Volume in backpack

I am considering converting from ground to hanging. However, it seems like the volume of space in the backpack to replace my Hilleberg Unna with a WBBB, plus tarp, plus UQ will go up. Meaning the hammock gear will take up more space than my current tent after factoring in the elimination of the Unna and Exped down-7. Any thoughts?

I love the idea woof hanging, but am concerned about space in my backpack.

I've been tuning my gear list since I re-started back packing about 10 years ago. Now, I don't camp in the winter so my experience is late spring through early fall, but my current pack volume is down from my tenting days. The only way I could reduce it from my current set up would be to go back to a tarp (maybe) but I'm only talking about a coffee can size difference.

Thinking on the move: my current tarp is what I'd want if I were back to ground, my hammock is as small as a bivy, my UQ is a little larger than an inflatable pad, no poles with either, stakes for both. I must be missing something.

I've never used a WBBB but I can't imagine that a Hilleberg Unna would pack that much smaller.

First off, that's a bomber tent you've got, but you'll be more comfortable in the trees.

I think the volume would be fairly equal, depending on the tarp and UQ you choose.

The size of my rig has gone up because of my big hammock and tarp (WB ridgerunner/poles and cloudburst tarp), plus topquilt and full-length underquilt. My pack (ULA Circuit) was big enough for 3 season, but not big enough for the winter top/underquilt and extra gear. I now have a Gossamer Gear Mariposa, and it is massive and can fit everything! I plan to use it year-round. It will be overkill size-wise for the 3 season stuff, but it's lighter than the Circuit, so it's all good.

If you consider making your system modular, keeping the Exped down-7 to use in the hammock, you have a good all round set up.

I use (currently) an Alpkit Numo as my insulation, with the addition of a fairly light bivi, you can hammock with the exped/tarp or ground dwell using the mat/bivi/tarp.

    Just a thought

Other manufacturers like Wilderness Logics, Tree to Trail Gear, BIAS, etc are Made in USA also. I approve of your desire.

    So many choices

I am trying to ensure it all fits in an Arcteryx Bora 80. So many choices!
