    Quick overnight spots near Atlanta

Our second Warbonnet BB just came in, and we're thinking about heading out for a quick overnight to give it a shot. We're not looking for a hike, just a quick walk somewhere, slap the things up, maybe have a campfire for a bit, then doze off. A free spot would be nice, but a cheap campground is OK with us too. We're basically looking for a spot to try them out in cold weather and work some of the bugs out. Any ideas for something quick and easy near Atlanta that won't require sneaking around and worrying about whether my bright blue tarp is stealth enough?

What part of Atlanta are you in? There are some campgrounds around Pine Mountain and Lake Lanier that may be hammock friendly. Stone Mountain had some campgrounds a while back...not sure if they still do or if they'd let you hang a hammock. Or Mt Yonah area if you're on the north side...you could get a couple miles in for some good views, or maybe even pull off of a jeep trail and camp near the car with some decent views.

Or if you're brave, go urban stealth and have from an overpass or something!

I'm just outside the perimeter to the northeast - Helen is a bit further than I'd like to drive, but Lanier isn't too far away. Stone mountain is 5 or 6 miles away, but they charge 35 bucks a night for a campsite

Looks like the south part of Lake Lanier is about an hour from you. Fort Yargo is about an hour towards Athens...they used to have some nice lakeside campsites when I was a kid. Lake Alatoona and Red Top Mountain are about an hour towards the NW side - the military has a decent campground at Alatoona if you have any connection there, and I'm sure there are a few regular campgrounds as well. Red Top is a state park near Etowah Indian Mounds and it has camping.

And Amicalola is ~2hrs...you can camp at Springer Mountain. If you use the road instead of the approach trail it's not a big hike.

Camp on Stone Mountain like I did last year.
Pretty darn cool to say the least. Might not wanna build a fire though.
