The website says it uses a catalytic burner and is flame free.

    Durtsurf,
Zippo markets lighter fluid for the The Zippo hand warmer and cigarette lighters. On the hand warmer, the wick element is temporally removed from the top of the lighter and absorbent material beneath the heat element is saturated with lighter fluid, the heat element reinstalled and it is ready for use. The heat element is ignited and immediately burns off excess fuel. From this point on the heat element has a slightly subdued glow when blowed upon, not noticeable afterwards. The (wick) is some kind of extremely fine steel wool. I'm looking forward to using it next week while trout fishing and hammock camping, to warm my sore areas as well as sooth the tender parts and enable me to stay comfortable and reduce some swelling at the same time.

Using A Hot Water Bottle To Stay Warm

Ok a question I had on this topic. You have a 32oz Nalgene bottle rolling around in your foot box. Does anyone use something to keep this bottle in place in a certain area. We can all say we lay flat in a GE hammock but things do tend to roll to the center of the hammock....or am I alone here? Can anyone help, I haven't tried the warm bottle trick yet.

I put the bottle right between my thighs. Stays in place if you don't toss around much.

The point in this hack is to keep the femoral arteries warm. The water bottle is not a space heater as such. Warming the femoral arteries keeps warm blood running to the feet and toes. I have neuropathy problems in my feet and sometimes need a heating pad to keep them warm. I will put the heating pad under my thighs, right below my butt cheeks on the same principle. Works like a charm. The heating pad under my feet is a waste of electricity for all the good it does.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

This is why I am scared to use a water bottle for warmth.

That is why you triple check the top and put inside of a plastic bag. But I wouldn't wish a wet sleeping bag at -30* on my worst enemy.

Has anyone tried the Zippo method? The warmer uses zippo lighter fluid, is inexpensive, easy to carry, The hand warmer works about 8-10 hours on one refill.
I never got a zippo hand warmer to work/light properly. I've had 3 of them and they have all had the same problem. They never light or if they do light? They don't stay lit. Wish I had better luck with them.

So I had asked about the temperature allowance for the HDPE nalgenes awhile back but found this on their website in case anybody is wondering.
    Withstands temperatures from -100ºC (-148ºF) to 120ºC (248ºF)
