As everyone else has said, very helpful! For a noob there is an absolute wealth of information on this board!
All of the links seem to be dead
Any chance of an update for newbies?
Ah! My hero- thanks!
Thought I'd post this here since I'm going to Start something different.
Instead of using 2 trees, I'm going to take a pole. The reason is to give me more options on where to hang and the orientation of the hammock (wind, terrain, etc). No need to find 2 trees the right distance apart.
The poles I've had for awhile. I think I got them in REI, probably Kelty. Designed to support a tarp. I used them in the back yard to try hanging from them with no trees. Worked fine. The trick is the tie outs. In the yard I tied off to the fence which worked fine. In Utah there was no fence and the stakes didn't hold in sand.
Yesterday while house bound with snow on the ground I gave it some thought. 1 tree, 1 pole, 50' of Zing-it (ZI), 4 dog bones. The ZI gets a clove hitch or larks head to the top of the pole and a fixed loop on each end. Each loop gets 2 dog bones passed threw and staked out, (tie them off if a rock or bush is easier). That gives 8 stake outs instead of 2. Raise the pole and attach your hammock and tarp, tie off the other end of your hammock and tarp to what ever tree or shade structure you chose.
Take 2 poles if your going to have no trees, ie. near the arctic circle or a beach.

Interesting hang option. Would like to see this set-up in a diagram or more pics. Two poles at REI = about $90.00.
I'll try to set it up today and take some pics.

The green line (Dynaglide =900 lbs) is 50' think I'll shorten it by half. The soil is garden variety back yard. Stakes were pushed in by hand and then stepped on, about 8" long.
Weight tested. I would move it away from the garden box for sleeping (just to be safe). Tarp on top shouldn't need explaining.
What do you think?

If I take 2 poles I don't even need a tree. Capital Reef and Big Bend are the only places I been told not to hang from trees. Other places, we've all been there, the trees are to Big to small to far apart. 2 poles would carry me threw even at the Artic Circle.
