    Amsteel Blue tree huggers?

I have a search notification registered at ebay. On the page I was sent to, it was suggested that I might be interested in these.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Amsteel-Blue...90730666739%26 ,

just 6' lengths of blue Amsteel Blue 7/64" cord with a fixed eye splice at one end, a back-tuck at the other, and a Youtube video instruction to use them by wrapping the tree and making a marlin spike hitch toggled with a twig.

Now, the interesting thing, to me is that ebay / paypal has sold, at this time, 20 pairs of these of the last two months (in 16 transactions.) Seller has sold about the same number of whoopie sling pairs in the same time.

    • So many hammock users who wouldn't use straps instead?
    • So many hammock hangers who care about weight
    • trust on the basis of this listing the strength of Amsteel,
    • and they're not regular HF members?

I posted a comment at his Youtube site and hopefully viewers will take notice.

The video has been viewed less than 700 times, but it also looks like some are buying these tree huggers. I hope a few don't ruin it for everyone by damaging trees and giving a bad name to hammock hangers.

"minimalist survival" folks very rarely care about LNT ethics. I'm pretty interested in Bushcraft, and I cringe at some of the destruction happening to woods where people practice some of the skills. I just hope that most of it happens on private property, rather than public lands, which are often over-used.

I hope this will not catch on.

    This isn't a tree HUGGER.

GRR. I wonder if it's possible to contact the seller?

Any Ebay users who can "ask a question" on the Ebay page?

I asked a question. I'll post his response if he sends one.

I did that as well, and sent him a link to this thread so he can see what others think of his "tree huggers."

I wonder if Tom Hennessy could get involved with patent infringement (or is he not so big on that these days?) Not sure that he patented that idea though.

    To clarify, and to add:

Sure, I firmly believe that you should use straps of at LEAST 1 inch (if not 1.5 inch) to protect the trees you hang from, but the jury is out. What kind of trees? what kind of bark? how long to hang from? Some have reported immediate visible damage, others none. BUT the big issue here is perception.

The perception of the authorities (rangers etc) can be that hammocks, especially when suspended with wire, nails, or rope, damage trees and thus should be banned, along with anything else that gets hung on trees. Tree straps / tree huggers are changing this perception. Not so long ago it was illegal to hang in Florida state parks, but now you can, as long as you use huggers, which protect the tree.

What about the tarp? In florida, bring huggers for that too.

So, you might say that you have never seen any damage using these amsteel 'huggers' but this isn't really about 'evidence' - it's about the perceptions of the wider community. 1) so others don't pick up bad habits and 2) that hammocks are not banned, affecting the enjoyment of others.

IF you must continue selling these, at the very least change the name, it is deceptive. This is not a tree hugger.
