    BOTH hammock and tent

I am considering the following: tarp tent for when there are no trees (above treeline, dessert) AND a hammock for when there are trees. I would characterize my sleep in a hammock as a "9", on the ground - even with a thermarest pad - as a "4". I hate the ground!

Using cuben fiber, I figure I can get a hammock and suspension for around 12 oz, tarp and lines for 10 oz, and fully rigged tent for 16 oz. - total easily under 3 lbs. Anyone ever went this route? (Primary purpose: PCT, southern 1/3)

Once you have it made you'll need to post pictures because I can't totally envision it. Give it a try and post your results, if it works for you it should work for others.

Why not just use your hammock tarp as a ground shelter? A pad and top quilt/sleeping bag can be used in the hammock an on the ground.

If you don't want the expense of the Cuban hammock, the BIAS WWM is only 6oz.
Everyone ought to believe in something....I believe I'll go set up the hammock!

Check the Lawson Blue Ridge. I got it because when traveling by kayak, I set camp before the sun goes down. No trees = sleeping on the ground. The Lawson will fit in the kayak with no trouble, weight isn't an issue because I'm only carrying it 10-20'. Check it out.

I'm thinking it's either a tarp with a floor or a tent suspended between 2 trees, but I'm probably wrong (am I even close).

Has anyone ever sewn two, two-way zippers on opposing sides of a large tent or screen tent for use when car camping or the like?

tarps can be the primary shelter, depends on how you feel about privacy issues. I agree with mrmike.

16 extra oz is a lot when backpacking! But, you'll learn soon enough if you do it. Your hammock tarp, sleeping pad and bug net will work for those rare times you have to go to ground. You absolutely, positively don't need to carry a tent!

When I am out where I am afraid I may not have a place to hang I toss my NeoAir in my pack. At 14oz it isn't bad when my normal base weight is 13#. I set the tarp up on my hiking polls. Marlin Spike my whoopies to the polls. Blow up the the Neo and stick it in the WBBB. TQ and good to go. It's just like a summer bivy with a bug net. Probably should use a Tyvek ground cloth with that and be very careful about where you lie as the hammock is not as tough as the bottom of a tent. Although some of those cuben tents like the ones from Zpacks have mesh floors which dont look very tough.
