    a knotty question

I've recently got a hammock/tarp and have learned a few knots, and sooprize to me, I want to master more of them. The table is covered with mason's line as I type.

I'd like some help with which are the most useful knots and what you use them for. I figure there's likely a particular knot that's perfect for the job, even though others might work, too.

I searched but had no luck so if this question's been beaten like a stray dog please point me in the right direction (I like stray dogs, btw).

    Thanks.

Then you'll probably OD on this link.

Start with Prussic and Double Fisherman's knot, for starters. Klemheist and Truckers Hitch, will come in handy too. The rest are there as well.

Good luck and welcome to HF

As a climber my favorite knots are
-the figure 8(edit I mean figure 8 on a bite, alternatly you can use a figure 8 follow though), bowline (both for making loops in an end),
-autoblock, but a prusik is better to learn for hammocking.
    - clove hitch. (tie off to a carabiner/pole and its easy to adjust)

My general favorite knot is an alpine butterfly. I couldn't tell you why and I just love it. (It makes a loop in the middle of a rope)

Marlinespike Hitch- suspension toggle/ attach stakes to guy lines
Bowline- anytime you need an eye in a line (that you can't or don't want to splice)
Rolling hitch/ Taut line hitch- to make guy lines adjustable
Prusik knot- attach tarp to continuous ridgeline/ attach guy lines to tarps
Water Knot- if you ever need to join webbing
    Klemheist- alternative to prusik
Figure 8 Follow Through- to put a loop into webbing (be sure to dress the knot)

Heres a link for you too:

Good point, I edited mine to be more specific.

Also, the double 8 is a fun knot. We always used that when I was working ropes courses.

Celtic button knot. Great tied stopper for quilt suspension, amsteel stoppers, etc. Looks great on a knife lanyard too.
.... the Aardvark (earth pig)... a rather unremarkable creature whose sole claim to fame is that it is the first animal listed in the dictionary.

On any given campout I tend to use almost all of the following knots. There are others, but these are my workhorses:

    Marlinspike hitch
Tautline, adjustable grip hitch, or farrimond hitch
    Figure 8 or double overhand
Alpine butterfly or figure 8 loop
    Prussic
    Bowline or Kalmyk
    Siberian hitch
    Trucker's hitch
    Slippery half hitch
    Canadian jam knot

It is also useful to find different ways of tying these--I've seen all sorts of ways to tie a bowline, and I used to ignore the alpine butterfly till I found a quick and easy way to throw it together (now I use it more than the figure 8 loop because I can tie it just as quickly, and it's waaaay easier to untie after it's been loaded).
You're gonna need a bigger hammock

    Figure 8 - General knot
Prusik / Larkshead - anything with continuous loop
Bowline - Makes a loop at the end of the rope
Alpine butterfly - loop in middle of a line
Marlin spike hitch - Connect tree huggers to whoopies
    Clove hitch - General knot
Sheet bend - Tie 2 lines together
Double fishermans - to make a continuous loop
    Slippery half hitch
