I'm in the "returned to straps" club. It's just faster and easier to deal with and the additional 3-4 ounces just isn't a compelling reason to deal with separate tree straps and carbiners. Went camping this weekend and it took me 10 seconds to bring down my setup in the rain since all I had to do was slip the strap out of the Dutch buckle.

I use a straps on my camping hammock (a clatyor) and whoopies on my hiking hammock (a lightweight homemade utility hammock for taking naps on day hikes.)

But, I don't use a biner with the straps - I just loop one end of the strap through the other after going around the tree, then thread the loose end through the rings.

And instead of spike and marlin's hitch, I use a biner with the whoopies. I wrap a short tree strap around a tree, put one end through loop in the other end, then attache a biner to the loop in the free end and attach the whoopie to the biner.

I had this happen to me one time and that was enough for me to remember to always check my set-up before sitting down (tarp included)! Another option for you is the Dutch Whoopie Hook (with inverted whoopies), since I have switched to this suspension I have been extremely happy with it (more so than with any other suspension)! Also there is the Dutch Buckle which has a shockcord strap which goes over the whoopie to add additional security.

I vote for biners to attach the whoppie as well.

This past weekend I set up in the Smoky mountains for a post picnic nap. I forgot to pack my biners so for the first time since making whoppies, I used a spike in my MSH. I was successful, but I did not get the peace of mind that a locked in biner gives you.

If I liked ending up on the ground, I'd sleep in a tent and avoid the painful deceleration getting there from a hammock.

I have used the MSH and have switched to the Dutch Buckles. I have not had problem with either. I now have a continuous loop on the hammock, and use soft shackles to attach the whoopies. If I have close trees, I don't use the whoopies, just hook the continuous loop onto the Dutch Buckle.

Cranky Bear, thanks for the tip, I was just using the shock cord on the Dutch Buckle to secure the webbing, when I roll up the straps after a hang. Now I will use it for extra security, so my amsteel doesn't fall off.........RR

I went back to rings and carabiner from

using whoopies, though it's a little more weight. Whoopies work well, but I
get more advantages from the rings and caribiner overall. Am still tinkering with different setups for different conditions.

This thread inspired me to come up with a simple way to keep that darn loop in place. I don't know if it is an original idea, but I haven't seen it before & I think it'll work. Here's the thread. http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=57947

It's great to see I am not alone in this. I fully agree with the fact that I should be more careful with checking my suspension before I sit. But like illustrated in the OP, I am human and I make mistakes. I forget things and it seems I am forgetting things even more when I am having fun. Guess its just me getting old.

I really like all the different systems posted so far and how each one is basically custom tailored to the user. Perhaps one day I might try out a few more suspension systems. But for now I really like the simplicity of the Webbing and Ring Buckles. Its a suspension that seems to be a bit more forgiving to my forgetful mind. Also, I really like its ease of use. This might prove to be very useful when in the dead of winter and my hands are frozen. I wont be fumbling around with knots or whoopies with frozen hands or thick gloves. Now I am moving on to my First DIY Complete Hammock shelter system. Wish me luck.

I use Elephant Trunks to solve the problem.

Here is what I was referring to with the girth hitch behind the toggle/MSH.
