Sleeping bag to UQ mod question

I've got an Eddie Bauer polyfil sleeping bag that I grabbed from targets clearance racks for $3. The zipper had come unstitched on one side so a $23 markdown.

I've got some 2.5" grossgrain and intend to run channels down the long ends. But the question I have is : should I cut the bag in half? I see some guides suggest it, but I see other people just leave the bag intact.

I assume it's just a trade off between insulation and weight. It's suppose to be a 40* bag.

I am curious about this too. I may have to do one up fairly fast for an upcoming hang. I've got two with busted zippers. Anyone have an opinion?

Figure out how wide you want the UQ to be and add an inch or two to the width "just in case". If you aren't sure, look at the measurements of other UQs that are known to fit your hammock well.

Then open up the bag and measure out from the middle the desired width (half the width from the middle, if you know what I mean). Then once you have marked the edges you can sew a line to hold everything in place. Once you have double checked that you have the correct finished width, you can cut the excess edges off the bag.

Then you can sew in your gross grain channels along the edges for your suspension, etc.

You could also save a step and sew in one side of the grosgrain as part of sewing the initial line. Then trim the excess bag, fold over the grossgrain and sew another line to secure it.

I have also read where people have used the extra sleeping bag width to create the channels instead of using gross grain. So if you wanted a 1" channel on the edge, you would cut each side 2" wider and then fold it back on itself.

    Hope this makes sense.

If you can hang your hammock in the house or outside and get an assistant to lay in it you can mock it up and see what you need to do to the bad instead of taking a swag at it. It really helps if your assistant is about your size in build.

Another tip: if you're going to cut the bag, sew along the cut line BEFORE cutting it, then cut just outside the stitches. This keeps the insulation under control after cutting and will make adding grosgrain or whatever much easier.
    Good luck,
