Algonquin Park - Sept 1-3 - Going Canoeing

HI to all the Ontario and Toronto area hangers.

My son and I are going to do a 2 night paddle in at Algonquin Park on Sept 1.

It's an open invitation to anyone that wants to meet up with up and enjoy the last long weekend before the kids head back to school

Doing a fairly easy trip .
Entering at Access point #6(Smoke lake) and heading south to Ragged lake for both nights. There is only 1 240m portage
Planning both night on ragged lake (my son wants to stay on the island)
then on the second day we are going to explore the devils staircase and crown lake and parkside bay.

I will be out the previous weekend at Bon Echo Provincial Park for a backpacking hang with a few other members from here.

    Have fun with your trip.

    Cheers

Ragged is a very nice lake. I wish I could join you, but that weekend is wedged in between a couple other trips I've committed to. If you're interested I have a jpg map of the lake with descriptions of the various campsites I've visited.

baron -- I've been to little doe and tom tomson - just want to see what's south a few friends have been to Openengo - but I don't like the idea of a water taxi ( or the paddle is you decide to do that route)

My son choose ragged - he wants to camp on the island there.

So YES I'd definitely be interested in a description of a few sites there - looking for a site that has really good swimming - perhaps a nice rock to jump/dive off (5-30 feet would be Awesome!)

    Hey Lofty,

Sounds like a wonderful trip you have planned there. I solo'd that route about five years ago and the EGL hammockers passed through Ragged last fall on our way to Boncherre (see my signature for the trip report "Cloudy with a ...).

I also remember, some 20 years ago, camping on the southwestern campsite of West Bay (although I thought it was Crown but the map says otherwise). Nonetheless, I mention it because at the time the bay was fairly heavily choked with grassy marsh with many little water channels going through it. It was here that I saw a family otters swimming around, snorting like pigs. You may want to explore in there a little on the off chance their great grandchildren are still there..

Parkside bay is also quite pretty and don't forget to bring a fishing rod.

As always, paddle safely and come back with lots of pictures!!

    Thanks Chard

    Looking forward to this trip.
    I finally got a canoe
It's used and a little rough on the eyes.
Just need to patch a small crack -- and bring duct tape on the trip
