    mosquitoes...ack

any body here know how to keep from getting eaten alive while sleeping in the hammock? I've tried the spraying the fabric with permethrin I've sprayed with deet which did last a couple of days but that just gets expensive, being a perma-hanger and all.... I just need a cooler way to hang without having to have a blanket under me, I tried a sheet but they tore me up... any recommendations will be appreciated.

Those blood sucking *******s!! Their are several different options you have. Here are two.

    1) Get some bug netting and make something like this. Click the link below!

    2) Or you can buy something like a Black Bird Hammock from Warbonnet Outdoors.

    Hope that helps

I just got back from a week at Scout camp. It was my first time using permethrin and I believe it worked well. I sprayed both hammock and clothing. I didn't end up with many bites at all through the week and where I did get bitten were in areas that did not have pesticide sprayed clothing. Considering that I did not use bug spray at all, I was very impressed. In fact, the only bugs that got onto me while I was in the hammock were some ants that fell from the trees and landed on me (didn't have the tarp set up).

Although I am frugal by nature and permethrin is expensive, permethrin will now be part of my regular prep for camping during buggy times of the year.

That's the reason why I sleep in a Clark with the mosquito proof bed. I gave it a pretty good test in the BWCAW a couple weeks ago, came through with flying colors.

If you've treated, maybe something like an ENO Guardian bugnet, that hangs below the hammock, is in order?

If the problem is mosquitos attacking from underneath then try spraying the bottom of your hammock ( and your bottom for that matter) with Picardin (Sawyer products or Some Cutter products). Deet can harm synthetic fabrics -not so Picardin (however it is oily so jury still out on that one. You may have to wash your hammie more often.

Deet works well for me on the Skin -Not on the knot (err...) Not on the Fabric. I have been using Picardin and is has less odor than deet but might last somewhat less time than Deet

Permetheryin treatment should be done about once or twice a year i think. Both Deet and Picardin only last a few hours before they evaporate.

If you're an outdoor permahanger maybe a Mombasa mosquito net would do?

Upgrade to a double layer hammock like a Black Bird Double or get a full big net
