You can certainly do without the biners because they are just a convenience. My camp Nano's at 22 grams are such that I want to be able to easily disconnect from the tree the next morning and start stuffing the hammock and quilt in a sack with the straps attached to the hammock.

Some of us old and not so old people have been reported to forget the strap left on the tree, hike all day, then realize they forgot to pack the strap.Has not happened to me......YET.Btw,I like the descender rings because I find them easier to use than any sort of buckle.Mine are just larked onto the CL.

Another unplanned perk of Dutch's polypro/dyneema webbing, my straps are far less likely to blend in with the tree than with standard black.

    Cool Tucking the bight...

I love that little double ring mod about tucking the bight under the lower ring. Foolproof. lb

I often use these rappelling rings when tying a ridgeline or other utility line at a campsite. Like where you'd put the loop in a Trucker's Hitch. I specifically would like a smaller ring--like 1" even. Do they exist? I've looked around and haven't seen a ring that small.

Is anyone using UHMWPE with ring buckles? I see a note on Dutch's site that his Spider Web straps don't test well with buckle type hardware. Wondering what the issue is. Is it simply that it slips? If so, then wouldn't the usual safety knot suffice?

The tendency for slippage is precisely the problem. The fibers/weave of the webbing just doesn't provide enough grip for cinch buckles to bite into. Dutch's Spider/Poly webbing was created to solve this issue, combining the strength and weight saving benefits of UHMWPE with enough polypropylene for the buckles to bite into.

You could presumably use UHMWPE webbing with ring buckles if you trust yourself to always tie a safety knot. Of course, if you're that concerned with weight savings and are going to be tying knots in your suspension anyway, it might make more sense to omit the buckles entirely and go with a Beckett hitch or something similar.
