    Yeah, we're a little off-topic...but while we're here

I've been making separate-piece bottoms. It looks good and it's pretty easy if you pin it first and account for a bunch of little darts. If you don't, it's a PITA - BD can attest to that!

I like the folded idea, but like I said, it seems like a lot of wasted material. Although it's only sil so it's not like it could weigh much.

My sack idea would have two chambers, end-to-end like you mentioned. However, the two drawstrings would be on each end, not one in the middle. The middle would be a separate-piece sack bottom type partition, with a hole like in the end of a 'blackbishop sack'. Think of a normal 'blackbishop sack', but with another sack attached to the end so they share the bottom.

Why not make the strap end sack out of mesh in case straps are wet?

I haven't done a lot of comparison. He lists it as 5 oz per 24', so it's relatively light (for webbing) and not too expensive. And it's rated for strength, which a lot of websites don't do. And it's definitely polypropylene and low-memory stretch, which you also can't confirm on most websites.

I'm sure if you searched around you could find something similar, and maybe even for cheaper. But I know Ed and I'd rather give my money to him than to some big discount company who doesn't care about hammockers...that's one of the reasons I haven't bothered to search for a better deal. YMMV.

Thanks, that was the main thing I was wondering about

Hey - that's not a bad idea. Except that then it wouldn't keep everything else in my pack dry. I keep going back and forth on mesh snakeskins for the same reason.

After you sew across the corner, you trim away the extra fabric and turn it right-side-out...no extra weight.

Unless you use it for a bottom loop like the JRB sacks, or to hang a food bag with...then you'd keep the extra material.

I put my hammock is some large outside mesh pockets on my pack so it would work when packed like that. I use mesh skins on my tarp but not on the hammock. I started to make a pouch on one end of my snakeskins to store the rope on the last set I made but decided simpler is better, just not as much fun as making something new!

My homemade gearskin only has the main compartment - and I like that. Nice and simple. I may add a small mesh pocket for little stuff like my headlamp and first aid kit, but I don't want something as bulky as my hammock sticking out. Just my preference

I'm comfortable at my 22 or 23 lbs base weight for fall though spring and 20 or less for summer. It could go lower. But that would involve a lot of time and money that I don't have right now.

Plus I need something to think about doing when I get back.

I bet you'll drop 7 lbs from your base before you're done.
