We are planning on doing a proper comparison test so hopefully he will be honest about his nights and I certainly will be, even if it doesn't work out.
I have a couple of options to try and might take the spare hammock I have too if there's room in my bag.
I'm pretty confident I'll come off better, especially taking into account that he already has a bad back and we are doing one hell of a hike after the first sleep and before the second!

It's not so easy doing that around here unfortunately, the trees are few and far between and it is mostly farmland here, so flat open land with local parks just being football fields with no trees.
A trip report seems like a good idea, I will take the camera and document my friends discomfort as best I can.
For practice you might look into a portable stand for practice.

I have thought about this approach but they are hard to get here (I can't seem to find them anyway) and my wood working proficiency is similar to that of Homer Simpson so it's maybe not an option to make one either!

I'm being driven to the site and left there so I have no escape for 2 nights, I have a hike planned for the second day so I can't take any luxuries that I won't be able to carry on the hike (like my lovely Tilley lamp).
I have a buddy with me who is determined he will be more comfortable in a tent and I desperately want to prove him wrong!

Staying warm and dry are to two most important thing when out in the woods.
How big is your tarp?
Are you carrying rain gear?
Not having a bailout plan means you have to take extra precautions.
I live in England, we are always expecting (thus ready for) a heavy downpour.
The tarp I have is quite large (3mx3m) and I have full waterproofs. So rain is covered I think.
I would say staying warm & dry would be on high on my list.
Enough insulation top & bottom to keep you warm, cosy & protected from those heat robbing, cool night breezes...
A good tarp with a few tie down points on each side to weather those rumbling storms that roll in during the middle of the night...
Good company,a hot hearty meal & a nip of port.... and your good to go.
Flickering flames of a wood fire would be nice too..
Oh, and make sure the campsite has trees....

Keep in mind that if you take your 2nd Hammock and your friend uses it...make sure that he will be warm throughout the night. If he's cold he will more than likely stay with his opinion of the ground being better. JMHO.

It's a hammock thing, you won't understand!
The wife no longer kicks me out of bed after she saw a hammock hanging in the dog house.
I will advise him to use his roll mat between the hammock layers and his normal sleeping back should suffice I think for warmth. It's the peak of summer here at the moment so warmth shouldn't be an issue, even at night but precautions will be taken.
He won't be as comfortable as me with my uq but I expect it would be nicer than the floor.
