    Hammock/tarp etiquette?

So boothill and I went camping this weekend and got rained on both nights--it was great! We both have big-ish tarps and were in 'porch' mode most of the time. This gave rise to the discussion of tarp etiquette....while we thought it would be okay to approach someone's hammock while the tarp is in porch mode, should one not approach another's hammock if the tarp sides are staked down? Any thoughts?

I would say it would be best to announce yourself on approach when tarp is closed, you never know what you may see otherwise

I treat it like any camp setup and announce my approach and get permission before I enter any site. It's a little different when you are in a site with a friend and less formal but if the tarp is down, always ask first before you enter their tarp.

reminds me of an old signature i had. pretty much my attitude when hiking or camping.

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.

Your hammock/tarp is your home away from home and as such I think it always good to call out and announce you presence from a respectable distance regardless of whether in porch mode or not. If I'm relaxing in my hammock even in porch mode I don't want to be suddenly disturbed so I would treat others the same. Just my opinion.

I view it the same as a tent and announce my approach. If no answer an no urgency I let it be. If we are supposed to break camp at a certain time I call a couple more times and 'knock' on the fly.

No matter what mode the tarp was in, I always approach someone else's rig with a loud "Hello in camp!" I'd appreciate the heads-up if the roles were reversed. Just polite, I think.

Even in porch mode, a person may not be able to see over the side to see you approaching. Or---more likely---a person's eyes may be closed!
