    hammock comparisons/looking for options

I have used a HH (scout) and a ENO doublenest for almost 10 years now. I am a firm believer in hammock camping both for the comfort over tent solutions and because it offers so many more options here in the NE where tenting is sometimes limited due to the geography. While more and more of my camping is less sensitive to weight (i.e. less backpacking), this is still a concern. With winter coming in, I am interested in getting feedback from others out there on your experiences and possibly find a better solution for me to use next season.

    Heres what I have observed:
    HH - PROS
    - lightweight
    - integrated netting
    - trapezoidal design/ridgeline
    HH - CONS
    - limited chair and lounge modes
    - difficult exterior access from inside
    - access leads to dirty bag
    - difficult positioning pad/bag
    - ridgeline not adjustable

    ENO - PROS
    - easy conversion to lounge/chair modes
    - easy access
    - reliable pad/bag positioning
    ENO - CONS
    - combined component weight
    - multiple components
    - no ridgeline

Has anyone found another vendor that has addressed these already or should I consider building my own? I've read the discussions about building your own and am curious if others have found this successful in combining the PROs from these 2 styles or if the process and/or result made this option undesireable.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to the forum, Barry.

Your listed observations are more or less correct, but there are more details for each.

If you are inclined to DIY, you certainly should. But, if you haven't already looked at the solutions from Speer, Claytor, and Clark then you should add those to your list above.

One obvious solution would be to contact 2questions and ZQ and have them do the zipper mod on your HH. While I have not had it done, others who have rave about it. Seems to be the best of both worlds.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Link to 2Question's thread about it.

Wow! I never thought I would hear that you liked the DD after your initial comments. I'm glad you made the mods to the DD to fit you and your hanging style. I told you the DD was a good hammock! Maybe your hammock princess is mellowing you out, Neo.

I have a DD (two, if I get back the one I lent out,) a Clark NA, an SPBpro, an ATHH, a JRB BMB, and several HAAB style hammocks, as well as a very comfortable DIY. I love my Clark NA and it will always be my go-to hammock, but my JRB BMB is a close second as far as comfort & side sleeping. The others are good, but very similar in features and comfort. The DD was a great hammock for the price, and is very roomy.

The Clark NA allows me to use less insulation than the other hammocks and has all the built in storage pockets. The JRB BMB allows me to sleep flatter than the other hammocks, and with an air pad AND a UQ, sleeps like a feather bed, but seriously needs a zippered bugnet to move it up to the next level, IMO. The DD has the Pad Pocket that needs some type of closure, but is extremely roomy and comfortable, and allows me to sleep on the diagonal.

Every hammock has its purpose and its own features. I won't use my Clark over 80*, and I wouldn't use my DD below 40*. If I wanted lightweight and expected no bugs, I'd use a HAAB. If I need the insulation and was going to be spending more than a long weekend, I'd use the Clark or the JRB BMB. The trick is to find the one that most closely matches your needs and expectations. That may be a DIY. Personally, I don't think carrying an extra 12 oz daily over 2 weeks or 2 months is that critical if the hammock is comfortable, and meets the conditions. I'd rather ensure a dry, comfortable, and secure sleep over lightweight with possible seams letting loose on me in the middle of the night, or leaving a bugnet behind to save 3 oz and getting swarmed by gnats/mosquitos.

A ridgeline would be a snap to add to your ENO.
