I think the going theory is that you don't really save that much in weight or complexity by going to a hammock over a simple tent setup though the more complex ones are a different story. And a tarp tent setup is even more minimal. However, the comfort of a hammock setup is so hard to beat I gave up sleeping in a bed for a hammock every night. Now when I go camping, I essentially just move my bedroom. Where ever I go to sleep I know exactly what the comfort is going to be. No stones, now weird slopes, no funky crawling things. Theres a recent video on this forum of a member, justjeff I think, that wakes up to heavy rain and then videos a stream form UNDER his hammock. If he'd been in a tent his hike would have started off with a hunt for washed away equipment followed by salvage. As it was he merely reached down and grabbed his shoes then video'd the runoff.

And of course, watch SHUG's how to hammock series on Utube and it'll cover everything to get you started. Also, forum member Dejoha has a wonderful new book "The Ultimate Hang" which you can buy at Amazon.com. Get it in paperback OR on kindle, heck I got em both. Now I can go somewhere remote and read it if I want to OR bring it up on my kindle reader for Iphone OR kindle reader on pc. It's a great deal with a great deal of information on it.

Honestly, it seems hard for a Hammock in a stuffbag and a Tarp in a similar sized bag with to be as much trouble as a tent with poles in a bag not counting any of the other things that both have. Pad, sleeping bag, pillow, whatever comforts. Nice thing about the hammock is the two stuff sacks can be situated on different part of the motorcycle. Always seem to have to strap the tent on sideways so it isn't poking something on my Kawi Vulcan 900.

but heck, the last time I went out with the bike I had the trailer on behind it anyways. Tons of room that way, for foamy model airplanes for combat!

Welcome ADV. I am guessing you're also a member on ADVrider.

You'll want to check in and check up on the Motorcycle Hammocking thread.

Not a terribly active thread, but there are others of us in here.

    (DRZ and WeeStrom here...)

    Slimming down

    @Mrclean
I'm hoping the comfort will be the primary benefit, but weight load out, and balance should be much better for a few reasons.
First, this spring I lost 40lbs, so wearing my gear instead of strapping to the bike should feel normal to me, but make the bike "feel"much lighter. Since I want to do more traveling on the DRZ instead of the DR, it will be lighter!
Second, I use a modified North Face Rock 22 (shorter coupled poles). There are definitely smaller lighter tents, but if I'm carrying and setting up a tent, it's not going to be to small to keep all my gear in.
Third, with a tent I have to have a tarp for a ground cover, and a thermarest long sleeping mat. So, the accessories take up a lot of space and a lot of weight. So, I have progressed from this, for a two week trip...

To this for a two week trip...

And this for an overnighter or two...

To hopefully this for a weekend, and eventually as long as I want...

I know, I'm expecting a lot, but I am determined to go as minimalist as possible.

I'm fmlstewart on ADVRIDER. I wasn't aware there was a hammock camping thread. I will definitely check it out.

    Just a few specs...
The Rock22 is about 5.5lbs and packs at 22.5" X 7". Less the weight and mass of the thermarest.
    The Hennessy is about 2.9lbs and packs at 4" X 9" X 9".

Keep in mind, I have yet to do an overnighter with it, so the verdict is still out. But, I'm hopeful...

This is my bike loaded up to travel around the world. Two trangia stoves, two tarps, pots, food, water and one big cold weather, one warm weather sleeping bag. I use a eno dn because of its size and comfort.

What are those tires btw? Look like good DS compromise tires. Like 'em?

You ship your bike on boats if you poor like me. The tire are called heinburgs ( spelled way wrong) but everyone calls them k60's and they are simply the best DS tire ever make! I've tried them all from Kenda to scorpians and these are way better! Long long life, perfect road manners and rip it up in the dirt. I could go on and on.

You mean Heidenau. Yeah those are supposed to be bad a$$ tires.

I'll have to try 'em on my Wee.

    Thanks!
