Olive Drab Mosquito Netting at Hancock

FWIW: I thought the camo fans might benefit from this. I just found that Hancock Fabrics stocks an olive drab mosquito netting. Specs as follows:

Weight: 2.5oz/sqyd (probably a little lighter, they were generous when they cut my 4 yards)
    Width: 55"
    Color: Olive Drab
    Material: Polyester
    Hand: Surprisingly soft
Mesh: 337 holes/sq inch (25x13.5) (see notes below)
    Price: $3.99/yd

Please note the mesh. This is NOT noseeum but IS denser than standard mosquito netting. If you suffer with noseeum's then this isn't what you want.

Personally, noseeums aren't a problem where I camp and I prefer the better airflow of this material. I've been trying to find a better color than black or white for a Marpat camo HH clone I'm building.

The saleslady at Hancock was very helpful. She told me that although this is a regularly stocked product, they've been unable to get any resupply lately. I had earlier struck out getting olive drab noseeum netting from Seattle Fabrics who also told me that they could no longer get it.

Sounds like if you want it, now might be the time to stock up. If you don't have a Hancock Fabrics near you, you can order it online here. If possible, I'd suggest you go to a local store. Mine also had a forest green version that had a much harder "hand". I don't know which you'd get ordering online.

What is the weight on some of the other netting available? I was thinking that most of it was lighter than that, but it's been a while since I've looked at it.

I think I read somewhere that noseeum is 1.1, the same as untreated silnyl.

Edit: just checked at Quest. They list it as 1.1 oz/sq yd.

Yeah, I guess they have lots of variations. I know the nano is even lighter... & more expensive too.
I was thinking a lot of what was used as baffles in down quilts was lighter, making that one of the benefits of using it for baffles, along w/ that it allows better air flow with in the quilt, helping it to sink down & conform to the user. At least that's what I was thinking.

Wow, the Hancock stuff is relatively heavy. I've never been able to locate the typical weight of mosquito (as opposed to noseeum) netting; so I don't know if that's the cause or if its just the stuff that Hancock happens to stock.

Guess I'll go forward. My plan calls for at most 2 square yards once its cut down to shape, so my penalty for the color and airflow amounts to about 2.8 ounces (yuck!)... Okay, so maybe I'll have to re-sew it at a later date with lighter stuff.

Thanks for the heads-up; keep the good info coming!!!

Good thing you aren't color blind huh Neo!! You would be denied all that joy.

The OD netting from Hanckocks is what I picked up for my HH clone. It is a little heavy.

    Hmmm good idea.

But I was also thinking that if the baffles of an under quilt were made of silnyl, maybe the baffles would have exactly the opposite effect and keep the down filled tubes from collapsing - kind of like a balloon. Or at least slow down the collapsing effect. That would make the under quilt act more like one of those down filled air mattresses. Then maybe the under quilt would get pushed out instead of squished.

Also, isn't it warbonnetguy that makes his under quilts, at least one side, from silnyl?? Make the baffles out of silnyl also, and it would seem that the underquilt would be less likely to get squished flat and introduce cold spots.

    Just a thought.

It would probably take a lot longer to compress in the morning and loft back in the evening though.
