Hammock camping is a complete game changer

Greetings from a former avid lurker in West Texas. Why didn't someone tell me about hammock camping in my teens or twenties? My whole outdoor adventure life has been shaped by avoiding sleeping on the cold hard ground. I remember buying a bivy sack in the mid 80's thinking this is a really cool idea. It got used, maybe, 3 or 4 times. I quickly realized my comfy bed in the mazda b2000 camper shell was a much preferred bivy for my climbing adventures. Not being able to sleep comfortably seriously limited my desire to backpack and bicycle tour. I did some, but never enjoyed sleeping on the ground. What a shame, I love to hike, climb, and ride so much. Enter the hammock. I am absolutely foaming at the mouth rabid about sleeping in my hammocks; a JRB bridge and WBBB. The blackbird is my current hammock of choice. Hammock camping is awesome. At about 6 weeks of full timing I can't imagine going back to sleeping on a mattress for more than a few days at a time.

Thanks to all of the great posts that have guided me in my first few months. The posts and videos of Shug and Grizz/Prof Hammock are wonderful, entertaining, and informative. Just Jeff's great website provided a lot of info affecting my early choices.

Looking forward to many years of happy hanging as I approach the senior citizen ranks...

    Andy

Ditto!!! When I was a child, my grandmother used to get the ends of bolts of fabric from a store downtown for free. I used to string them up between trees in my back yard and do "gymnastics" on them. If ONLY I had spread one out and lain in it, I would have discovered hammocking and could have been hammock camping my whole life. What a difference that would have made!

    Welcome, friend. Great first post.

Surely, God could have made a better way to sleep.

    Surely, God never did.

Whew! I can agree with that! And I have a lifetime of stone bruises to prove it! Welcome from Florida.

Ain't it the truth! Ain't it the truth! Man, wished I'd learned about hammock camping a lot sooner than I did, but am glad - just like you - that I found this site and learned about the joys of hangin'. Welcome from Lawrenceville, GA!

I couldn't tell you how many times I've wondered the same thing myself. I don't know if I really had the desire for the outdoors then like I do now but I've always enjoyed relaxing. Welcome to the group from Ohio!

I've become a more avid camper now that I'm in a hammock, it's easier to camp when you know the most uncomfortable part of your day will be on the trail instead of in a sleeping bag.
