Kelty Noah's 12 vs. DD XL

My tarp quest has led me to these two options for a bigger tarp. Both can create doors, both can be used on the ground, and both can make an A-frame shape around the hammock while providing room for movement. Oh, and both are in my price range. Dimensions are different and the DD is $10 more. Is it worth the $10, or is the Kelty the better tarp?

I didn't check on the Kelty, but I think it is a square tarp. The DD is rectangular. It seems that most folks here are using some variation of a rectangle (myself included) but IMO, a square tarp gives a lot more pitching options. A 12 x 12 pitched on the diagonal will give good coverage in most weather and only needs 2 stake points. A rectangular tarp can be pitched diagonally but then becomes an asym which, to me, would be less desirable.
I imagine that either tarp would be good quality. I have a DD Frontline that I am very happy with (although will be selling soon to fund some other stuff).

I'm not familiar w DD. I have the old guide gear tarp which I think is comparable to the kelty. I also have the chinook 12 x 9.6. I like both and both are about the same square feet, but I think I like the square better.

The GG is wider so the walls are bigger. Porch is bigger. You can button up tight and still have head room.

I have a Kelty Noah's 9... And it works great pitched in a diamond. Pitched in a diamond you get away with a ridgeline and 2 stakes, NO Guylines. It seems all the specs say this thing is 9x9 point to point but my 9 came in at just over 10x10 point to point... Not sure about everyone else's or about the 12. But 9 has been great.

    I posted some dimensions here:

Here is my Kelty 12 X 12 with my ENO Single. This was the first time I set it up, obviously I needed more space between the tree's to get the tarp ridgeline tight. but there was still plenty of room.

I will set up again this weekend with my new hammock.

I have the DD and the Kelty, and I prefer the Kelty. I like the fact the Kelty has more hanging options. Not sure of the weight difference, but I thought the DD weighed more. Can't say for sure though.

Excellent thread! I'm a noob looking for my first tarp and have considered the Kelty 12 * 12. Would appreciate hearing about experiences from folks on this forum with this tarp. There have been a few folks in the reviews at REI and at Amazon that have said these tarps aren't waterproof, while others have praised their waterproof qualities. They both can't be correct. What's the hammocking groups experience??

    Thanks!

I have the Kelty Noah 12x12 but have not hung with it yet. I am a noob and have only ever taken naps in a hammock. I hope to go camping in a couple weeks to try it out. Here is a shot of the tarp with the hammock in front for a size reference. It is plenty big, just the way I want it.
