The wider the hammock (a double Trek Light is pretty wide) the easier it is to get really comfortable diagonally.

    http://www.treklightgear.com/catalog...2&idcategory=5

This is our "bible" and has plenty of drawings, including of how the diagonal lay looks like. Only $3.99 via Kindle. Many of us have both versions!

If you shop around, you might want to keep a list of the measurements so you can compare properly. Longer and wider = more comfort IMO.

    Hi everyone,

I'm getting ready for a couple years of hiking. I'm an experienced camper but have always used tarps or tents before. I've never used a hammock, but I'm really tempted to.

The only reservation I have left is back pain. I've napped in casual hammocks before on vacation and within an hour or two my back and neck are sore. have any of you had these problems with backpacking hammocks?

    Any input appreciated.

As most have said. Sleep diagonally (feet to one side, head to other side) and it's pretty comfortable for a bad back. I use a pillow for comfort.

Like others have said, my back hurts when I sleep in beds... I get 5 hours of sleep max and wake up with awful back pain.

I've been sleeping in a hammock continuously for the last 6 months. I haven't felt this good in years. No back pain at all.

I had used spreader bar type hammocks to lay around in but had never even thought seriously about trying to sleep overnight in a hammock. I discovered hammock forums, and a whole new world of hammock camping. I have trouble sleeping in my sleep number bed, my recliner, the couch. I awake with numerous aches and pains and feel unrested. I go out and hang my hammock, set it up for the night and know just what to expect, a great night's sleep and awaking with no aches and pains. The many different styles and types of camping hammocks available almost guarantee everyone a great experience. There is plenty of information here on how to set the hammocks up, letting us profit from someone elses trials and errors. IMHO just go for it and expect a fun trip.

I haven't spent a night sleeping in a camping hammock, but I sleep in a large Brazilian hammock every night at home. I went to the hammock because of years of back problems. So far I've only found 1 drawback. It's so comfortable I hate to get up in the morning.

You may be better off choosing a tent. Your back may be lacking in strength and cause back pain. It is recommended to try again whether you can adapt to the hammock before departure. After back pain occurs, the neck/back recovery heating pad can relieve the pain well. I wish you a comfortable posture in the hammock.
