    Bovine alarm clock

We paddled the Shenandoah last week, and stayed at a private "camp" (farmers riverside mowed field).
    Fishing was great,, BUt,,,
The farmer had some perfectly spaced trees about 4' from the pasture fence for us to hang from,, a nice fire ring and picnick table,, so far so good.

About 2AM I hear a very intense "sniffing" but was able to go back to sleep.
About 6:00AM 10 cows lined up on the fence, heads over the wire 1" from my hammock and all started mooing at the top of their lungs, this went on for 20 minutes.
They then all turned around and started simultaneously crapping 4' from my face.
Do you know what cow crap x10 splatting on the ground sounds like ??

Back in my ground sleeping days, my wife and I were camping on the Texas/Louisiana border, and I left my tent to water the flowers. It was a little after dawn, and I slowly surveyed the scene around me as I shook the dew off my lily. Suddenly, I realized that I was surrounded by at least 75 longhorn cattle. They were everywhere. I'm no fan of cows, and my wife is even less of a fan.

I urged the cows to leave the area (physically and verbally), and they eventually complied. By the time my wife woke up, they were gone. I can't even imagine how she would have reacted if she met a longhorn steer outside her tent. It would not have been good.

I asked the campsite owner why there were cows roaming around the campsite. He said, "Oh, they're free range cattle." Whatever the heck that means.

Free range = great burgers! I've been stalked by cattle, hogs, etc. but the worst was a curious bear cub roaming into my tent and the best was having my nose nearly licked by a fawn the 2nd night I spent in a hammock. In both cases their 'moms' simply watched from nearby. Thankfully neither of them chose to fertilize the turf.

Maybe they just wanted to hang out under the tarps?

Thanks for posting. This made my day. I literally Laughed Out Loud!

Nice pics too! I got into fishing just recently so my kayaks (all sit in) aren't decked out nearly as nice as yours. I've got a deck bag that holds a collapsible rod and all my lures and stuff. Also have a cold bag that fits at my feet if I want to keep any fish.

I've always heard that cows were curios critters and the best way to get their attention was to lay down or turn your back on them. That's kinda funny. They gave you a 10 cow salute.

Yes I do know exactly what that sounds like unfortunately as I grew up on a dairy farm in south central Kentucky. Still that was a nice area to hang minus the extra aroma. Nice Kayaks. What model is that?

Agreed, but I usually sneak a piece of bacon in to the grind when I'm making hamburger to bump the fat up a little.

That's funny but let's hear Hickery's side of the story.
