AT to the Rich Mountain Lookout - need advice

Hey everyone. I am planning a quick loop or out and back for next Saturday - Sunday and I think I would like to check out the Rich Mountain Lookout via the AT from Hot Springs, NC.

Just wondering if I could get any ideas for routes and such from the community here. I am going to REI in a bit to grab a map.

Picked up a map and read up some online. Looks like a good loop although very short. Any suggestions on camping spots and water sources?

A nice hike, with a GREAT spring near the access trail to the firetower. Not been up to the tower yet, but good campng there near the spring. The initial climb up from Hot Springs can be a bit much, but past about the first mile, relatively easy. YMMV.
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.

I just went through that section a month ago. Doctari has a good memory -big spring just past the Blue blaze and good camping on the ridge above it.

But for my money, in that area, for an awsum view, I'd go back just for the stretch of trail from Bearwallow Gap toward Jerry's Cabin Shelter. That was a gem. There are warnings against using it in bad weather, but I'd go prepared for whatever and I think the experience would be enhanced over a fair day.

I am kind of bummed, due to a change of plans I won't be able to do this loop this weekend.

But, I am very excited because I am taking my 5 year old out for his first official backpacking trip. Going to do an out and back on the Middle Prong Trail in GSMNP to campsite 28. Pick this out a couple years ago for the family. Awesome waterfalls to keep the attention of the little people off the mileage.

Thank you for all the advice, I will be hitting up this loop later this year.

Now for a quick remedy to tandem hanging.
