Question Cinch Buckle and Webbing: Some Questions

Yesterday I received my doublenest, and a cinch buckle kit from AHE. So I had a few questions pertaining to suspension:

    1. How much webbing do I need? The AHE kit came with 2 x 15' lengths, but I've found it's a bit cumbersome to fit into the doublenest stuff bag. Would I be okay with 10' lengths if I cut them down?

    2. What kind of stopper knot should I use? Do I even need one?

    Thanks for all your help!

I've had situations where 15' was barely enough, in Ponderosa Pines. Unless you are an ultralight backpacker, I would keep the 15' and get another stuff sack.

Ah, well! We may conjecture many things. The men talk as cheerfully as ever; jests are bandied about freely this morning; but to me the cheer is somber and the jests are ghastly. Powell 1869

My son just got 15' straps from Arrowhead and thinks they are a bit long. However, he used to have 8' and had to carry his original eno slapstraps in case he had to hang from a large diameter tree. The Arrowhead straps do soften up with use and he is able to stuff them into the eno built in bag.

Suspension length depends on where you hang. Some woods have larger trees or the spaces between trees are farther. Use them for a bit to see how much you use and then shorten them.

If your cinch buckles are the triangular one then they typically do not need a backup knot. There was a report though of webbing slipping a little when wet through the triagular ones. The round ones should be backed up by a slippery half hitch and it wouldn't hurt to do the same with the other cinch buckles.

My 15' straps are pretty annoying most of the time, but even as little as I have been hammocking I have been so happy to have had them that long on two memorable occasions. I consider them as emergency gear, seldom used but valuable when needed.

Agree that I'd leave them as-is. It may be cumbersome (maybe even a majority of the time), but the first time you end up camping with some trees that are far apart, you're going to forget how burdensome they might have been when you are hanging comfortably in your hammock and your buddies are hanging out to dry!

P.S. Love A.H.E.'s cinch set. It is excellent.

    Good advice. Take it.

I can almost guarantee that if you shorten your straps, you will live to regret it.

Like mentioned before, length needed depends on where you hang. Most of the time I only use 6-8 foot straps but there have been a few times when having a longer strap on the pack was the only thing that kept me off the ground. Depends on the size trees you MIGHT need to hang from.

Also as mentioned NO backup knot with our kit. A back up knot can pull the webbing out of alignment and could cause problems.
