Thermoflect UQ

Just finished my DIY version of a Thermoflect UQ. I followed the IXC UQ directions modified to just create the bottom layer. The other difference is that I did not sew but glued in channels using Goop glue. I used material cut out from the neck grove to glue the dart together. The glue worked great but only worked to glue the blue side to a blue side.

Thermoflect seems to have 3 layers - blue layer is soft absorbing material, middle is aluminum and the outer layer is a plastic film. My test will use the blue layer on the outside so any moisture will collect and can be easily poured or shaken for removal.

I am only planning to use this into the middle 50's on a trip to the BWCA and will let you know how it works.

This might be a good windscreen for an UQ, or a vapor-barrier insert, too...

Is it warm?

It is warm. I was skeptical at first but you can feel the warmth radiating back to you. I am thinking wind screen too - this is more of an under cover than a UQ.

I'm using and testing this product for Encompass Group .. The blue side in will absorb any condensation {dew point seems to be the biggest factor in condensation in my findings} .. this is designed to be toward your body .. I made mine with 1/8'' shock cord sewn into channels that runs the entire perimeter of the UQ .. it weighs 4.6oz .. I have used it to supplement a 3/4 40*F UQ to 15*F .. I have also used it alone to 60*F before I felt a cold spot .. with a CCF sit pad and this .. 50*F-55*F would be about as low as I would push it .. I'm playing with it now as a TQ ..

it is used for SAR hypothermia victims and for patients on operating tables to keep from going hypothermic
