    Ridgeline length ideas?

I've got my SBPro and set it up for the first time today... Was curious if anyone had any guidelines on general setup...

Trees - how far apart ideally?

Ridgeline length? What's a good place to start?

Think I've got my strap / rings setup working, and have a tarp on order.

    Thanks!
    Jim

Ridge length should be no shorter than your height and no longer than the trees are far apart. The trees should be farther away from each other than the hammock or tarp is long but close enuf for the ropes to work properly without needing extensions.

I don't want to sound flip. But IMO that's about it for outside advice. Anything else is so personal it is tough to project. I seem to do well with a ridgeline of about 120 inches on my DIY Bridge. But the HH has a factory set structural ridgeline of 111. How much sag do you want/need for the comfort you want/need? How much on the idagonal you going to lie. I tweaked and tweaked with my daughter's Skeeter-Beeter (not pro) and never really got a good lie for her. But she became very weary of the constant in out and round about before she decided she didn't want to do this any more.

The farther away the trees are, the higher you have to hang you suspension lines depending on the hammock and how much sag you want and what you suspension system is. When I built my back yard hammock stand I set the uporights at 14'. So far that has been usable for everything I have thrown on it, but with a couple of caveats. My HH Safari, even with a ridgeline of 111 pretty much maxes it out because there is alot of "stuff" beyond the ridgeline. I try to find trees about 14-16' but then I like to hang my ropes fairly high I guess. But I REALLY like to keep my butt off the ground.

Lots of real personal choices and none are really "wrong." Have fun testing. It's part of the learning curve
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Ridge line length is different for every person and different for each hammock. The only way to find the correct RL length is to experiment. I would suggest trying to implement the SLS suspension, at least temporarily. It's pretty easy to adjust the ridge line length with that suspension system until you get it dialed in. You can also just use a piece of rope and a trucker's hitch to make a quickly adjustable ridge line.

Also check out the ridge line forum for some more ideas.

ridgeline length is also relative to the length of the hammock. for instance, take 2 hammocks one 9' and one 10'. even if both have 100" ridgelines, they will have very different levels of sag.

you can just hang your hammock without a ridgeline with varying amounts of sag, when you find the amount of sag that you prefer, measure the distance between the suspension points and use that for the ridgeline length.

One more question - what kind of line do you use for the ridgeline?

I'm assuming it's not under as much load as the supporting lines so it doesn't need to be that hefty??

    Thanks,
    Jim

That's right. I don't normally hang so that the ridgeline is under much stress---used more as a guide to setting the rest of the suspension to get the desired sag---but being a cautious sort I still use cord with a pretty good rating. Often use the no-tangle orange cord Speer sells, rated to 150 lbs or so. TiredFeet turned me onto LashIt which rates to 400 lbs and is very light.

I also have the SBPro and it didn't come with a ridgeline. I threw up a separate line for the tarp. How are you setting yours up?

    See this post.

Each end of the ridgeline is tied to the suspension cord on the end of a hammock. I also put in spots in the netting so that the cord can go inside and hold up the netting and the little bag that I put my glasses and headlamp in.
