    Pitching a converted Rain Fly

I am going to be on my first hanging backpacking trip this weekend. I am going to use a 8.5x11 rain fly from an old tent as a tarp.

I experimented hanging it along the 11 foot side, right in the middle so that I had around 4 foot walls on each side.

I figured it was too short at 8.5 feet to hand on that edge. However, I did not even think about trying to hang it on the diagonal. Is that even feasible? As I was reading on the forums it looks as though people do that with square tarps. Has anyone tried it with rectangular?

    Thanks for the help
    -Brian

I used a rectangular tarp that way my for my entire first season with a hammock... works well, that tarp will give a little less than a 14 foot diagonal ridgeline length. you might use trekking poles or sticks to prop up sections for some extra roominess and tautness. I never got wet using my tarp that way. oh and welcome to the forum!

MIne works best on a bit of an asym, when pitched both high and low, but my hammock is 11' long, and a new Toxaway, with an 12' RL is probably in my future.

Keeps the showers off me in the back yard, but it has to be pretty fair weather to make it very far into the field.

    Thanks everyone,

I will set it up tonight and try it out as I bet I will need extra tie outs.
