Superior Hiking Trail - Wife's First Trip

Took my wife this past weekend to the SHT... specifically Castle Danger to Split Rock. It was her very first backpacking trip... we've always enjoyed camping together and hiking together, but for various reasons she has never made it out backpacking with me until now!

We left the Castle Danger trail head around 7pm or so and headed to the first campsite on the trail which was just over a mile. We got there just before dark and set up camp, gathered wood, and got a fire started just as a group of people rolled into camp. We all had a good time sitting around the fire. My wife and I were a bit jealous of the brats the other group carried in and cooked over the fire.

The next morning we packed up and headed out by 8:30am. It was a beautiful morning albeit a bit windy. We hiked to a campsite (can't remember the name) for lunch and as we were getting stuff out for lunch I noticed a pair of tree straps on the bench. When I got closer I noticed that they were stitched/signed by hammock forums' very own Fronkey Anyways we kept hiking and then took another break at Gooseberry State Park by the falls and rested our feet. We ended up getting to our second site, Blueberry Hill campsite around 5pm or so and first thing first we hung our hammocks and took a short siesta! we were awaken by 5 guys setting up their tents. We ended up sharing the site that night with 5 marines... just a great group of guys! The last day we had planned to hike back, but when we got to the 4 mile mark that day (back to around Gooseberry) my wife's knee started to really bother her so we headed out to hwy 61 and started to try and hitch hike. We ended up walking almost all the way back to our car before getting picked up. Turns out the guy who picked us up worked for the MN conservation corps and is a fellow hammocker... although not on HF yet. Anyways my wife said she had a wonderful time and I did too! We ended up doing about 22miles total so I was really proud of her!

    Great report

Glad she had a good time, hope she will want to go again.

    That is a beautiful area

Did you leave the straps or carry them out to send to Fronkey?

    Nice pictures.

Glad she liked the hike. Hope her knee feels better.

I love that rock climb at Castle Danger and the first site is so nice with that small creek.

I would charge Fronkey a fee for carrying his straps out for him

    Thanks for the report.

Sounds like a successful trip in spite of your wife's knee problem. Hope she heals real soon and is not discouraged. Maybe a few shorter and less strenuous hikes will boost her confidence and strengthen the knee.

    Beautiful pictures. Thanks for posting.
And the Fronkey straps just show us what a small world we live in

I actually leave little treats at every campsite I stay at. Just look for the "Fronkey" logo.

Glad the wife had fun and I'm sure it won't be her last time out in the woods.
