I'm interested in having one with somewhat shorter tripods where overhead height is limited and no tarp is necessary, but also having the option to hang higher where I want an open tarp and/or pet palace. I can just make two different sets of tripods (say 5' and 6.5') and use the rest of it with either set depending on circumstances, right?

5foot would be very short.... I made mine with 6ft 2x2s and I use no suspension, just continuous loops flipped over the ends of the fence post and it's just a little lower than sit height. I also don't prefer a ton of sag so my lowest point is higher than the average with that configuration. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if using a longer than 10 foot hammock, 6 foot tripods are probably at least nearly the minimum height.

When a six foot tripod is set up with the legs apart, how high is the top of it?

Also, does anyone see the irony in a DIY task that can be done in 30 min, but the thread describing it takes about 24 hours to read? Is there a cliff notes version somewhere?

Yeah, I saw that. I was referring to the 3000 footnotes.

Longer hammocks plus 'higher foot end' setups require longer ridgepoles and taller tripods. Build your stand to fit your hammock/setup of choice.
Hi, I’m new to hammocking and would like to build a turtledog stand but am having trouble figuring out the right heights and lengths.

I am 5’6” and 135 pounds. My hammock is 9’6” (it is what it is) and my tarp is 12’.

In order to fit in my SUV, my poles can only be 69” long, and my ridgepole will need to be sectioned to fit in that length as well.

I tried using the hammock hang calculator to figure out if this type of stand will work given my limitations, but I am not sure how to account for the height lost when the poles are angled to form the tripod.

I’d be grateful for any pointers. Even though this is an affordable design, if it’s not going to work for me I’d rather know before the trip to Home Despot.

I’ve been trying to wade through this and other threads but now my head is spinning.

72" legs spread 45" apart at the ground measure ~68" from top to ground.

Thanks, appreciate the help! I think I’m going to go the surplus aluminum mast route so that I don’t have to hang too low.

I have two sets of the aluminum poles. I lash them together and it has worked very well for years.
