I see some people putting rope around the legs at the base, to keep from spreading. Is that needed, or only if attaching without the hinges??

I have found that on soft ground I don't need the rope to limit the movement of the legs. The soft ground and my weight keep them stationary. I don't think I would use them on a hard surface with out the rope.

I know the kind of poles you're talking about, and i don't think they'd be strong enough to withstand the weight and forces being put on it.

No one warned me about this, so I thought I'd let folks know.
Prior to TD - one project per winter. Set-up on nice day, experiment, take down.
With TD - set-up in spare room and any spare time becomes mad science time.
    Project 1 - $35 sock, Project 2 - $100 UQ, Project 3 - $5 HUG bug net, Project 4 - $38 UQP, Project 5 - $0 Shug style breath catcher, Project 6 - $30 tarp pole mod. That's $208 this winter in hidden cost of owning a TD stand.
That's right folks, prior to the TD I was happy with adding one item per year to improve my hammock, tarp and CCF pad system. Now I have a closet full of DIY items for all weather conditions possible south of the Mason Dixon line. Spring is here - so I'm done for this year.
Now to save up for next winter's project - DIY winter tarps.
Add in water shoes, new pack, a stove, a stove, a stove, and the titanium trinket of the week, convertible pants, new bag yadda yadda yadda and the wife looks at the box in the mail and says "now what?"

I have to say a huge thank you to all of those whose wisdom is available here! I built my TD stand, and am happy to be able to hang in my back yard (no trees)! I need to make the ridge pole a bit longer, but luckily the PO of the house left some fence top rails in the garage.

Cutting a chamfer on the top ends as a limit stop is not the most effective way to prevent the legs spreading. There is a lot of leverage there, due to the length of the legs.
Far better to hobble the legs, if you are concerned with them slipping.
