For the two piece metal pipe that fit into one another; is the purpose of this for strength to keep the pipe from bending or just storage and transportation?

Transportation and storage. My two pieces are rough the height of my tripods.

I don't think it adds strength.

Ok, I have a very long single piece metal pipe. Like 15 ft or so. I'll cut it down and then cut it in half and find a male-to-male connector since it won't fit into one another. Thanks!

Haven't been on the boards in a while, but thought I'd put this on. Needed a couple of stands for our upcoming Ragnar overnight trail relay in October so I built a couple of turtledogs. Went 14 feet on the ridge and 7 feet on the front legs. Back legs are 6 feet 8 inches. So far pretty solid. Will test it in a couple of nights.

Just finished my TurtleDog this evening. Thanks to everyone for the hints and tips I've been reading here. It's set up and ready to test sleep tonight. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...type=1&theater

I finally broke down and made myself a TurtleDog stand. You'll have to ignore the paint job. I got bored while it was raining.

I added a handle at the balance point of each tripod and attached a velcro strap to keep everything together.

I finished mine and slept in it for a week in a hotel on a recent trip. Worked great. I'm now in the process of tuning it up by sanding and painting it. Plus a few more tweaks. I'll try to post pics later.
