I use mine outside, I have had no problems. I take it car camping when there are no trees.

I use it outside regularly and it works fine if you understand its limitations. Unless you are in the hammock to weigh it down or have a tarp strung up and staked down the hammock will act like a wind sail and knock it over with a slight breeze. This can be annoying but if you keep it in mind you can avoid damage to your hammock and gear by staking out a tarp or not stringing up your hammock until the moment you are ready to get in it. It's also a stand best suited for fairly flat ground, but then again most stands are.

For an "anti-tip over when empty" measure, has anyone ever tried adding a small hinged bracket to the bottom of a the tripod legs? My thought would to to use something with a hole in it and use some simple tent stakes to put through the hole and into the ground to hold the stand upright even when it is unoccupied?
I use a small caribeaner though a hole in the hinge with 550cord to a stake in the ground, with a trucker's hitch. It makes it rock solid

I've a tie-out on the outside legs to a stake in the ground that had worked so far. I had it pull one Y stake out and fall over when the wind gust was over 30mph and I had a tarp deployed.
I've moved to the orange screws and no fall-over so far (fingers crossed).
Add me to the list..... over 350lbs, worked great!!!!

Hi folks,
First time poster, delving into the world of hammock hanging ...
Thanks to this forum, & this post in particular, I threw together some turtledog tripods using dressed 2x2 with a gate the hinge & currently awaiting a 3m x 38mm mild steel pipe (wall thickness of 4mm) for my top rail.
Very difficult finding the chain fence poles here in sunny Scotland!
Anyway, my tripods are app 6 1/2 feet in height, but can I tap into the forums knowledge to suggest the correct distance of spread of the tripod legs?
Or is it just a case if trial and error to set the distance?
I plan to use rope to set once the distance later.
Thanks in advance

Hey Clyde,
I dont have the answer for the spread of the tripod base/legs. I just wanted to say welcome.
Good place this is. Someone smarter than me will have the answer for you.
I kept my legs at 8 feet. Once I set it up, I played with the distance and then ran some line through each leg to keep the legs from splaying out.
Have fun.
Bob
