I took it to my son's place last week and multiple people hung in it in his back yard. It held up well. It did suffer damage when a tube he pulls behind his boat was caught by a big gust of wind which blew it against one leg hard. It hit the side of the leg and loosened the screws in the small hinge and the joint of the larger hinge itself. I laid in it afterwards but didn't like the angle of the joint. So I found a piece of 1x4 about ten inches long and two c-clamps and clamped it onto the side of the leg. All was well.

That has made me rethink the joint. I'm going to experiment with 8 inch long 1/2 plywood pieces 1-1/2 inches wide to replace the locking hinge. I'll replace two of the screws in each half of the long hinge with 1/4 inch bolts which will hold the new plywood piece snugly in place - I hope. The result won't be as convenient but it should be stronger. Seems one is never done with these projects! Here is a corrected link to my web page on this project. http://www.huyettm.net/hammock-stand.html

So I have a stand made for camping when I am unsure of tree availability. Usually at home if bugs are not bad I have plenty of trees to hang from but being summer and humid I hang in the garage. Well Friday I ended up having back surgery and can hang in the garage but lately weather has been decent and I would like to lay on the deck. I tried with help from my son to set it up but with a non forgiving ground it keeps sliding. I cannot do any lifting and might just scrap it. How do you set up on a deck without tipping and or sliding? At what distance does every one have their tripod legs spaced.
    Any help would be appreciated
    Ed

You need to add some high strength string to the legs to stop them from extending out further than necessary. The string does not need to support your weight, it just needs to be strong enough to stop the legs from sliding out

That depends on the length of the legs. The ideal angle between legs at the head is somewhere between 40 and 60 degrees, narrower and is tippy, wider and there is a lot of force splaying the legs (and they get in the way more).

Woodsie8, have you looked into making a stand with 4' aluminium military antenna mast sections?

wouldst resolve both dilemmas, rot & transportable

more expensive butt they should last forever

8' tripod legs and 4 section 16' ridge pole all breaking down into a 4' bundle

    just another option

So these are strong enough to use for legs on a tripod or just the ridgeline?

This looks like a great idea if one could figure out how to attach the legs into a tripod system... would make everything very transportable
