BTW, this is what I was talking about. It's not that elegant, and I should have been more careful with the drilling the holes to get them centered, but it works. I also added stake loops about 1-2" from the bottom of each leg using some 1" webbing I salvaged from an old backpack that wore out. With the cross-bars and stakes in place, my stand was super stable. An added bonus is that the nub of 2x2 sticking out of the back of the outer leg makes a great place to tie off the tarp ridgeline.

Set the legs to be contained to 48" and also created a strap and hook system that lowers the ridgepole down approx. 9".

Can anyone explain why the ridgeline goes slack when weight is added to hammock now? When I had it set up between two trees (about 16-17 feet apart) I didn't have this.

Chances are with the length of your hammock/suspension you're a bit shorter than before. Shorten the suspension if you can.... Once you get it dialed in then maybe you can skip the hook/strap system and just shorten the tripod legs.

the only way the ridgeline can go slack now is that your ridge pole is bowing shortening the overall length

when you crawl into the hammock and look up you wont see the bow if it is upward

the attachment points you are using are outside the points where you are suspending the ridgepole from the stand thus pulling downward on the ends causing the bow

the trees didn't move

it doesn't take much

Here is my approach. I took the hinge idea and elaborated by having a local metal worker fabricate tripod mounts for me from steel. These are VERY durable and stable. Then I followed standard procedure. A few details to work out still, but these are a very very nice solution.

Steven forgive me for asking but what does the fabricated, tripod mounts, eliminate as a problem? Is it to keep the legs from splaying/moving or is it a solution to a problem with the hinges?

Steven, as one who weighs in over 275# on a good day i too tend to "overbuild" many original designs

just rememberize the original design for this system was simply lashed bamboo legs

your "heavy metal" solution should hold you quite well as long as you have good wooden legs

the wood we can source today is most often the weakest link in this design

just an old fat man's 2¢ worth this morning
