    Hammock Stand Idea

I was thinking the turtle tripod was a pretty good idea. I was trying to think how to minimize materials as I am planning to use emt or some sort of metal tubing. So I thought a bi pod would make sense. Then I remembered the old saw horses my grand pa use to have. Take a look at the crude illustration to get the idea. I may try and make on if I don't get sidetracked before I can get the materials for it.

I originally lashed up a "swingset" style stand as you have drawn and could not make the angle brace connections tight enough to do the job. I had to attach an anchor strap from both ends to the ground to stabilize it. I eventually went to the turtlelady style and have not looked back.

Your way will work well if the materials are stiff enough, the angle braces are long enough and all connections are bolted (with no slop at all) or welded.

The tripods add two legs to the material list while deleting four angle braces and two cross braces and you can get by with sloppier connections and lighter materials.

edit....and before I could post, oldgringo has nicely shown the long braces, solid connections and heavier materials required. I must admit that is a really nice implementation of the idea that looks like it should last. I like it!

Does the bracing interfere much with the "swing" of the hammock?

Are the braces far enough out to clear a tarp or do they interfere?

Good question. I've never tried to hang a tarp, but there's plenty of room for the hammock, so I'm going to guess that a tarp could be hung tight to that side.

Ferball, I don't "swing", but if I did, I doubt that the braces would present a problem.
