    Cat Tarp as Ground Shelter

I recently learned the importance of being able to use a tarp as a ground shelter. Additionally I learned of the benefits of cat-cut tarps. I am seeking stories of people successfully using a cat-cut tarp as a ground shelter, and what brand tarp they used so I can make my second ever TARP PURCHASE! WOO! Thanks in advance,

I used my Warbonnet Big Mamba Jamba tarp as a ground tarp for months before I could afford my Warbonnet Blackbird hammock.

I already had all the items to tent camp, so I just replaced my tent with a tarp.

I could only buy one item at a time so it made the most sense for me to buy a tarp first that I could use as a ground tarp then buy a hammock to complete the package as compared to buying a hammock first and not having a tarp for a few months.

You can use any tarp as a ground tarp though.

I would think that you could use any tarp for a ground shelter. As to what tarp you want, it all depends how how much you want it to weigh and the coverage that you want.

I have a Superfly and I love the doors and couldn't think about settling for any other tarp.

I was tarp camping before I was a hammocker. I hate tents and their stuffiness. If bug protection is needed, I have a bug bivy but, now I only do it when there is no way to hang a hammock. That usually means desert environment for me, and few to no bugs. I prefer a rect cat tarp for this, but as mentioned any tarp can be used. Hiking poles are a bonus.

We are now ready to start our way down the Great Unknown. We are three quarters of a mile in the depth of the earth. We have an unknown distance yet to run, an unknow river yet to explore. What falls there are, we know not; what rocks beset the channel, we know not; what walls rise over the river, we know not. Ah, well! We may conjecture many things. The men talk as cheerfully as ever; jests are bandied about freely this morning; but to me the cheer is somber and the jests are ghastly. Powell 1869

Depends on your level of confidence, available time, budget, etc.

DIY is cheaper but requires time to make and confidence in sewing.

Buying is more expensive but does not take your time to construct and requires no sewing skills.
