Perhaps my wording was not clear. I am not knocking Down nor saying that synthetic is any better in a gear flooded situation. With either you need to protect the insulation from getting soaked. It does not make any difference one bit which you choose if your pack ends up in the lake your in an "up the creek" situation. Both will be near totally useless until thoroughly dried an no matter what you do either will take many hours to toughly dry. Protecting your insulation from these kinds of catastrophic accidents are all you can do. A good stuff sack, dry bag, pack liner, pack cover....so on and so forth should be something you take and use as needed.

In none catastrophic situations like wind blown rain getting your quilt damp...personally as someone that uses and makes and sells both again I still don't see a benefit to one insulation over the other as far as being "safe" Both would get damp, both would loose insulation value and you would be wet and cold too if it got to a serious level. Properly pitching your tarp is how to prevent that potential problem.

The real variables to consider when choosing Down over Synthetic or the other way around. Is cost/budget, compressibility and it's importance to your use and potental wait times on production and it's importance in your "need it now"--or "not in a hurry" point of mind. At least those are the variables to consider to me.

I've got 2 down bags, a hollowfill bag and a couple of pieces of fleece, and a couple of poncho liners. I have not had a problem with a wet bag since I was in the Boy Scouts and we got caught in a all weekend rain. OTOH I have not done long wet trips. After looking at the Wiggy's thread and considering what I have done with fleece and pile clothes I am leaning heavily toward a synthetic quilt for the cross Maine Canoe trip we are planning. I am not sure down will handle as week of rainy, foggy, weather. OTOH I am also watching the weather to see if I need to worry about it.
I have pulled both fleece and pile out of the washer after the spin cycle and worn them dry over a T shirt. No problem. 2 yds of good fleece makes a nice blanket. No other fuss required.

I use A DIY primaloft tq and UQ...because that was what I could afford. It works, but when the budget allows, I will totally upgrade to down. When it really comes down to it, the only advantage synthetic really has over down is that it is cheaper.

I think if we were to watch that closely I bet there would be a hammock somewhere between those tanks. One of my favorite movies.

I have a bunch of SB's, all of them are synthetic. One of them is a 15 deg Eureka Casper which I like a lot. I think for most folks, a 15-20 rated bag is the most versatile of ratings. TBH I can't wait to replace or at least accompany this bag with either a quality down SB or perhaps a similarly-rated down TQ/UQ combo.

I love these things, but they're too bulky, and heavy. I'll keep the Casper for canoe trips in the unpredictable ADK.

ps, yeah, the Wiggy's threads got me... I got an Antarctic on sale.
