And since 1985 you think I was accident free?

I quit worrying about getting down wet since I did it once in 1985 and learned to take precautions. Since then I've taken all sorts of spills. Set up in all sorts of downpours, and lived for weeks in damp weather. I put it in a waterproof bag. I put my waterproof bag in a pack liner, and I use a pack cover over all that.

    Down is fine.

    Down.....

yes you can run the risk of it getting wet but like others said don't matter
Synth or Down wet gear sucks ... i spent a night in a wet synth bag and trust me i was NOT warm
like all my gear i take steps to make sure it's not going to get wet if i'm going to a place with river crossings or a lot of rain i'll use a Cuben Fiber dry bag and a Pack liner on regular hikes it's a M50 quilt stuff sack and pack cover ... never needed anymore
heck the only time i ever got my quilts wet was in a storm to end all storms that dumped 5" of rain in a few hours it was insane ... and they were still ok to use but the shell was a little damp
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

I got a down bag wet once back when I was a ground dweller, I did not die. In fact I wasn't even all that uncomfortable and this was in 40 degree weather. The whole "if you get down wet you will perish" thing is way blown out of proportion IMHO.

Ah, a rehash of the old down vs synthetic debate. The subject that just won't die.

Agree with this. Whatever insulation you choose, just have a plan to keep it dry and follow through on that plan.

Exactly. Even if you have synthetic I bet you plan to keep it dry. If you plan to let any insulation get wet you are doing it wrong.

This reminds me of the whole debate about water filers vs treating vs going natural.

What matters is what you are more comfortable with more than what the actual danger is.

    best reply ever

but seriously, i do understand about down and why it's generally speaking one of the best insulators. i was a little concerned about how hammocks are kind of open. but obviously my concerns are unfounded.

    thanks for the feed back

I love your avatar. Good sense of humor. You will go far. A sense of humor is probably more important than sweating this subject.
