    Alternative to Figure 9

I found this in my knot book. Works well. Holds very well. It doesnt bind once the load is off it, slides easliy and locks tight under load.

Not saying Figure 9's dont have their place. I have several and ordered some more last night...

I might try this on my guy lines. You can leave an open loop, loop around your stakes (if youre using stakes,) and draw tight.

Im using two in this pic to pull my receiver stand tight....On the yellow line

    from the wiki article:

The knot grips adequately, but under sudden stress will slide to a limited extent thus reducing shock.
That's an important caveat. For me this is not so much an alternative to the figure 9 as another knot potentially useful for hammock camping. My fingers don't like knots, although I personally love them.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

That quote from the wiki article made me wonder a little too. Would it slide in gusting winds if used for guy line or ridge line tensioning? It does look slick though.

Im not suggesting using it for your hammock suspension.

My experience with it is if you cinch it up, get it under load, it holds. In the pic I posted...once I got set up, and in my hammock...I bounced around in it pretty good. Had the truck moving quite abit and the knot didnt slide.

I think the key is getting under tension for it to hold. It does release well once tension is relieved so I can see it letting go if tension is gone. However...the figure 9's are the same way..they only work if they are tensioned.

And if you are using any version of the self tensioning guy lines..then in theory it should hold. Assuming you are using small enough line that it has the ability to pull tight and hold.

Im going to try it this weekend..or maybe tomorrow.

Don't get me wrong... I think it is a cool knot and if it works and you like knots... knock yourself out. As I say I love knots... but my fingers much prefer wrap and snap.

I hear ya....Im not really a knot person. I think the figure 9's are an excellent idea.

Just an alternative to the figure 9.
