Five Basic Principles of Going Lighter (not me... the great Cam Honan of OZ)

The winter arctic canteen is reliable but heavy but is worth the weight.
I’ve used nalgene, single walled steel (Klean Kanteen) and double walled steel (hydro flask) for winter camping, they all work but have their pros and cons. I prefer the hydro flask as it keeps the liquid warmer longer but you give up some capacity with double wall. All can be reheated/thawed by putting them in water that you’ve heated.
Be careful about freezing Klean Kanteen, I had one split completely across the bottom after it froze and they recommend not letting them freeze.
You can also use a couple of plastic bubble mailers, using a rubber band around the 'package' to hold the folded ends together.

I have been putting mine on the ground underneath me and covering them up with a bunch of leaves. No problems with frozen water as of yet. Been down to 19 degrees. May not work at temps colder that that.
