The birdcage effect might not hold if the path to ground were not good. Anybody inside could become a ground conductor due to the massive voltage and current (however brief) that would take any path to ground, not just the shortest... keep in mind that the laws of physics are different at those voltages...
This, of course is only my opinion based on very little first hand knowledge of lightning...

Here are a couple pictures of the Dome at this years Eco-Endurance Challenge (E2C) as well as a video of the tear down of the Dome. The top Cap of the dome still needs to be completed but they wanted to try it out first to see how big they wanted to make it. The plan is for it to be removable for "indoor" cooking and extra ventilation when desired.
My son (aged 10) and I had the privilege of joining the 5th Cole Harbour Venturers in the Dome for the weekend. There were 9 Hammocks Hung inside the dome. It seemed to be quite an attraction for both competitors passing through our safety site as well as other volunteers at the E2C.

I seem to have lots of experience for my age
Nice! Thanks for the pictures!

This has to be the coolest thing I have ever seen on Hammockforums. Man, that is awesome!

If i could get the $$$ to make one it would be great for my family...before the end of the summer we will have 8 in hammocks
They are a great bunch of teens. They aren't afraid of hard work....but are afraid of having to go to ground so they figured out a way to not have to and I have had the privileged of hanging out with them even though I am more than twice their age

Thanks for joining us at the Eco-challenge Highland Horde.
The guys enjoyed having you and your son in the dome making this our largest group in the dome so far. Glad 2 of our Venturers couldn't make the weekend or we would need more room. With one advancing to Rovers and 4 coming up from Scouts we may need to put an addition on the dome or move the kitchen out of the dome.
The dome has cost less than $700 including the custom cover. As seen in the video it all fit in the Blazer. (complete kitchen, 2 tables, chain saw, gas and oil, stoves, lantern and my son and I with all our gear)
This will be perfect for the next week long Jamboree when we are forced to camp in a field.
that is really neat!!
Well done! That thing is a beast! Makes me want one
Highland and the dome-hangers,
Thanks for these vids. I have not seen these before today. Excellent work to all involved.
