question regarding hanging a ridge line above the tarp

    Hey everyone,

Last weekend I carried out my new set up for hanging a tarp. I had bought a ridge line with dutchware from Whoopie slings and hang it above the tarp(Big MamaJama). I had a small piece of shock cord and a mini biner that I used to connect the eyelet of the tarp to the prussic knots on the ridge line. I don't know that it matters but I am using JRB Self Tensioning Lines on the tie outs to the stakes.

My main question is this: I'm trying to reduce any bulk that I can in my gear. Would it be a bad thing if I were to remove the shock cord and use a mini binder to directly connect the eyelet of the tarp to the prussic knot on the RL?

I know there's literally hundreds of ways to do things but was curious if this setup is possible. I know that the lines to the tie outs will be what tensions most of the tarp and not necessarily the ridge line.

    Any info is greatly appreciated.

You will be fine without the shock cord on the ridge line. You could even go so far as to go without the S-biners and use soft shackles prussiked directly onto the ridge line. That's the way I do it and it has held up fine thus far.

    I'm not an expert but...

You can lose the shock cord if you're not concerned with having your ridge self tensioning or using the shock cord as your fail point. You could get rid of the mini biners and larks head the prussic to a trail stick toggle that would attach to the eyelet of the tarp; just run the prussic through the eyelet and larks head to the trail stick or other toggle.

On my Warbonnet tarps I just threaded the split rings on the prussics ( like putting a key on a key ring. always worked well for me.

Not that its a huge bulk savings but you could go without a continuous ridgeline since you are setting up above the tarp anyways.
Make a couple of small continuous loops for each eyelet of the tarp. Wrap those loops around some line with a prusik. Now all you have to do is attach the line to the trees and use the prusiks to centre the tarp and to pull the tarp taut. This just does away with about 10 or 11 feet of cordage.

I 'biner my tarp to prussiks on my over-the-top ridgeline, have had no issues and it's dealt with some decent snow in the short time I've been using this setup. I didn't find a need or want for tensioning of my ridgeline.

I larks head my continuous loops to the eyelets on the tarp. Then wrap the continuous loop around my continuous RL creating a larks head. I keep my RL attached to my tarp and use snake skins to pack it up. The only hard wear I use on my tarp is a Dutch fly on the one end I wrap around the tree. The other end I toggle using a stix.

I'm planning to try using prussiks with dutch hooks to attach to the tarp ends. Figure the hooks are easier than toggles (and likely lighter).
