Why do they need to be put in the dryer if they are new?

If they have been compressed in their stuff sacks and shipping boxes for quite some time, then it is just a preventative measure to get the quilt back to its full loft.

right, you don't have to but any time you feel like it's been stuffed longer than you would have liked, or damp from a long trip the dryer is a good way to bring it back to 100%

no heat and low heat setting should both be ok. if you ever wash it, and then have to fully dry it from wet, you'll have to use some heat then.
