    I'm totally new.

I've been looking at camping hammock for a while, And I'm really excited to get one and start my camping, I'm just wondering what everyone suggests. I'm really interested in making my first hammock. Is that a bad idea though?

I'm hoping to learn alot from this forum, everyone seems awful helpful.

This would be a good place to start...

Jeff's site has a lot of good, basic information on hammocks.

I prefer the simple, top entry type hammock myself, & that's really easy to make.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

Not at all! Welcome to the forums. I think that the big questions are:

    1. Do you know how to sew? If not,

    2. Do you know someone who can teach you?

Keep in mind, a comfortable, quality hammock can be had for as little as $20.00 (travelhammock ultralight). Which brings us to our next question.

    3. How tight is your budget?

From my perspective, if an item is so mass produced that it's as inexpensive as the travelhammock ultralight, it is not worth my time to make it. If, however, I want something that is not so cheap to buy, or I want custom specs, it is worth my time to make it. It's a personal thing, and is also tied in with pride of craftsmanship, etc. Personally, I tend to reserve my crafting time for the accessories that make the hammock perform better.

I can sew. I acutally make most of the clothes that I wear so that's part of the reason I would like to make a hammock, plus. My budget is pretty tight.

And I really like "jeffs hammock" site. It's really informative.

Then you can see how easy it is! I say sew it! You can customize the hammock and the color scheme that way, too.

Do you know much about the different styles of hammocks? Do you have a favorite? There are many different instructionals for clones of popular brands on this forum, but I would say to start, it would be good to make the one from tothewoods.net. Very simple and comfy, and you can get a hammock going really quick while you search for the perfect design for your needs. Good luck!

All I really know is what I've read. I was thinking it might be a good idea to make a simple hammock first, then embelish upon it.(Since I really don't know w a whole lot about it.

That's the best way to start...go simple and add to it as you go.
