Thanks for your story (and the laugh). I had been considering ordering a quilt to harvest the down. You just talked me out of it and saved me many hours of work and frustration. Thank you!

Alamosa, stick with pillows. Those are fine. Quilts are a pain in the butt though. I learned some lessons and could offer some possible solutions now in hind sight, but yeah. Pillows are widely available, often cheaper, and easier to work with.

I hoped folks would get a laugh out of my pain. At least then it wasn't all wasted effort

The conquered quilt got one last jab at me. I woke up today, having spent 3+ hours yesterday crouched beside the bathtub scooping down, barely able to move from the waist down. My legs feel like they are made of concrete, only it's concrete that was bludgeoned with something. Possibly a minivan. Now I know how Shug must feel after those Uni wrecks.

    That was awesome...

My first down harvesting was from an old quilt, so I went outside. Broke out the trusty shop vac and some scissors...

Hmm... I thought... I should check to see if it's full... Poof! Down was flying everywhere, and piled up around the durn vac....

20 minutes of stuffing it into a pillow... that was a year ago... I still think there's some on the grass . . . somewhere...

    Thanks for the laugh

So how efficient do you think the recovery process is? You see blankets you could get that work out to about $4 to $5 per ounce. So if you got it all its a good deal. But, if you only recovered 75%, its cost is as much as ordering the down new but a lit more effort. (completely different story if you already have the down blanket)

Great post Frost. You prove that we not only learn from our mistakes, but from others. Some fabulous ideas on 'what not to do'.

You have saved many on this forum hours of wasted and frustrating work.

    Well done.
