If you make some soft shackles for your dad it would be eay too attatch to the tree while keeping the webbing on the hammock. I do this for my cinch buckle set up but with dutch clips. Super easy and I would still use my whoopies I they were all in ones but for now cinch is just to easy
Every time I hang in a tree I get a coconut to the head.....stupid coconuts

JPsax, I like the idea of the soft shackle and I may make some for me. Dad on the other hand.... well lest just say I need to keep it as simple as posible. His hands don't quite work like they used to to having to pull the loop out of the bury may be a challenge. I will make some for him to try though. I like the idea of the soft shackle, especially for the fact of it doesn't have the same possibility of damaging tree bark like a biner might.

Soft shackles are nice for the option of changing things out without facing knots that have set. But, it is a pleasure to snap a well-made carabiner over a pair of loops and to slip the 'biner out of them, in two seconds, and be done with the connection.

Keep that simplicity and satisfaction in mind when you address hanging the rain-fly / tarp. I'm knot-boning every night, and not pleased with the fiddle time, including the amount of time just handling cord, let alone tying time. I still feel like an inept calf-roper.

Ok so I know it has been a bit since I started this thread... but everything is finished now and here are some pics of what I ended up with. I am pretty pleased with it and dad really liked the simplicity of it. I ended up making a side stretch hammock with continuous loops made out of amsteel with the rings made into the loop. Ran the loop through the channel end, attached the ridge line and larks headed the ends closed. made to straps 15' each and embroidered H on the head strap and F on the foot strap. I made him some soft shackles so he can leave the straps attached to the rings and just sling up with ease. So here are a few pics of me testing it out before I handed it over to him.

Looks good! You may find down the road that the rings will hold more securely if you girth hitch or even prusik the continuous loop around both of them rather than running the single line of the loop through them. They will hold the way you have them but they will grip and hold the webbing better as the girth hitch will prevent one ring from migrating into the other creating more space between the rings for the webbing to slip through.

Got a hammock and suspension kit for my brother (who hates fiddling with stuff)... I got two 100 inch long 1-inch wide polyester webbing straps with short loops sewn in each end. He has carabiners on his hammock and clips directly to the webbing. Need it tighter? Make an extra loop or two around the tree. Or double it and clip to both loops at once. Hammock (with biners) and two straps and you're done.

I like the idea of adding a girth hitch to secure the rings in the loop as the do slide through each other on occasion. Thankfully dad is a welterweight so he doesn't put as much stress on it as I do. I will rig that up and see if he likes it any better.
jbrianb, that indeed is about as simple as it gets! If he tells me this is too fiddley I will rig that up for him to try as well. Thanks for all the great input guys!

Oh yeah, another benefit to girth hitching the rings together is you don't get them sliding around separately in the continuous loop. They stay together and so they are easier to handle when setting up
