    Rating for 2.5 climasheld XP

What type of temp rating would you guys give an underquilt with a single layer of 2.5 climasheld XP? Just wondering as I bought an older KAQ from a member who said he never took it out below 60. I plan on this being my late summer Boundary waters underquilt where lows can get into the mid to upper 40's at night, but usually warmer. Will I be warm enough?

You should be fine with 2.5 CA. If you sleep reasonably warm, and wear your puffy to bed I think 40* is fine. I've done it, but that's definitely the low end. Here is a thread from thru-hiker.com discussing the issue:

Enlightened Equip lists their Prodigy Quilt with 2.5 climashield 45*

Those sources relate to top insulation, but I don't see why what wouldn't translate to an underquilt as long as it's constructed well and used properly.

    Thanks man

That's the kind of stuff I am looking for. I still don't have the quilt yet but buying new gear always gets me revved up for summer to get here so I can take off. The KAQ in question is the same cut as the Potomac which is a full coverage underquilt. Looks like it should be pretty good. Anybody have any personal experience with a KAQ or single layer underquilt, please chime in here.

Here was a test I did with 1 layer of 2.5 oz CS in a torso length UQ that weighed a total of about 9.5 oz:

I was OK in the mid to high 40s, car camping and well fed, not after hiking all day in the cold. Next to a lake, tarp pitched high and wide. Jeans, cotton t-shirt, a summer bag as top quilt and finally a fleece hat that I remembered I had, about 0515.

I have had a cold back in hammocks a few times. I'm still impressed that my back and butt were at least OK, somewhere around 48F, not wearing fleece or any warm clothing(not even a hat until near dawn), with a thin layer of 2.5 oz/sq.yd Climashield XP.

You can always throw in a small 2' x 3' cut down pad (thinlight or z-light) in and use it as pack support in your back for added insurance. 3 - 4 oz weight penalty.

Can you put that between the UQ and the hammock or is it best between you and the hammock?

If I get a little chill on my back/butt I put the small pad directly under my back (between the hammock and my back) to cover from my shoulders to my butt.

You'll want that inside the hammock. If you try sandwiching closed cell foam between the UQ and the hammock you'll wind up with air gaps and be worse of than when you started.
